Project:  Intro to Handcrafted Cold Process Soapmaking

Picture
Project Description:  Create your own soaps customized to your skin type and fragrance preferences.  It’s easy, economical, and fun.  Using the “cold process” method, you will combine oils, fats and sodium hydroxide (lye) to make soap from scratch.  Take home 8-10 bars of soap.

During the class you will learn safety tips and practices, how to properly handle lye, the basic chemical process of soap, options for molds and what to do with your soap after it saponifies (chemically changes into soap). You will take home one batch of soap. This class is ideal for beginners who have never made soap before. You’ll never want store bought soap again!

Skill Level: Beginner/Novice. No experience necessary
Age: 18-65 (Teens aged 15 to 17 can attend if accompanied by a responsible adult who can supervise)
Length: One (1) 3-hour session
Availability: Tuesday and Friday 10:00 am- 10:00 pm, occasional Sundays

Class Details:
  • Students will work as a class on a batch of soap.
  • Each student will "take home" a batch of soap that will make 8 - 10 bars, as well as a recipe and a supply list of what you'll need to make your own soap at home.
  • Cold process soapmaking requires handling lye. We will teach you all of the safety procedures and encourage students to participate in this phase, but you may elect to watch if you're not ready to work with lye.
  • We will supply safety equipment, but we recommend you wear long sleeve shirts and closed toe shoes.
